Maureen in the foreground right; mighty Mendenhall Glacier in the background left. I don't know who the people are on the path!
OK, here's the scoop on this Glacier -- a moving river of ice with rugged, deep blue crevasses. Mendenhall Glacier is Alaska's most famous and best-known river of ice. We took a bus, O.K. motorcoach, tour to Mendenhall. I really liked our bus, I mean motorcoach driver, old what's his name, who moonlights quite openly as some kind of environment guy for Holland America Line. When the ships come in to the Port of Juneau, he checks their emissions -- who knows how -- and reports back to the Line with a figure that lets them know if they are respecting the norms or not. Well, thanks be to God, they surpassed the norms he told us on our return. Whew ! We could not have gone on without that piece of information ! OK, back to Mendenhall. It has a very rugged terrain, but we have to believe the brochures because we did not helicopter flightsee nor hike and climb, than you very much. Besides, I left my mountaineering gear at home !
P.S. We did not do the Salmon Bake option on this tour -- are you kidding? We had salmon, every which way on the Volendam, absolutely the most delicious fresh, Pacific salmon, I have ever tasted! Who needed to do this on tour ?
