Suspended-on-one-side-only bridge
Melissa pointed out to us that this bridge had won some kind of award because it is quite an engineering feat in that it is supported only on one side. Impressed me! As did her story about how recently she was bike-riding on this very same South Klondike Highway when she stopped to take in the view. All of a sudden she heard a growl behind her, put her arms above her head and started singing to ward off her prey -- a large, Labrador Retriever (some bear story, eh?!)
OK, have done some research and learnt that this is the Captain William (Billy) Moore Bridge spanning a 110-foot deep gorge. It was Moore who discovered the White Pass route to the Klondike. White Pass, in the St. Elias Range, follows the "Gold Rush Trail of '98," made famous by thousands of Klondike prospectors rushing to find their fortunes. The route has been used by dog teams, horses, wagons, a narrow-gauge railway (which we subsequently excitedly took on our terrific tour), and finally this new highway, which was blasted through to the Yukon in 1978.
