Juneau, named after Joe Juneau, the prospector who along with Richard Harris (not the actor!) found gold in 1880, is the second largest city in the USA, not population-wise, but geographic area-wise. (Sitka, AK is the USA'S largest community but we didn't get there this cruise.) Alaska is so big and so sparsely populated, it is departmentalized into boroughs -- the borough of Juneau covers more than 3,000 square miles. There are roads within the borough, but you can't "get there from here" by car; i.e. you can't drive to Juneau; access is only by air or sea !
